We are living in interesting times.  Medical Sales jobs, the cream of sales jobs, are still managing to maintain stability far better than any other sector.  But there have been rumblings.

Yesterday we saw Boston Scientific announce the closure of its facility in Letterkenny.  They will however still have a presence in Ireland with their Galway setup.

Perhaps of greater impact to Medical Sales representatives and particularly to Pharmaceutical Sales reps is the Pfizer-Wyeth deal.  The deal has made the pharmaceutical giant the biggest pharmaceutical company in the world.  Wyeth was no small fry though and it is going to take time for Pfizer to assimilate them.  This is already underway.  Training departments are to be merged.  After all it doesn’t make sense to have Sales Reps from the same company trained in two different ways.

“Rationalisation” can’t be far behind.  If there are to be redundancies amongst the sales force they should be minimal.  Why?  Well the Pharma reps that are already on the road for Pfizer and Wyeth in Ireland are paying their way.  They already have a high workload and they are doing a good job of taking their share of the market with their respective products.

Redundancies would mean risking a fall in sales as overstreached Sales Representatives try to handle too many products and clients.  It’s all about market share.  Spreading too thin leaves gaps in the market for the competitors to exploit.  There may be a few jobs threatened but not until the training has been unified and implemented.

We have seen a few Medical Sales jobs disappear but most of those redundancies happened as a knee-jerk reaction to the threat of a freefalling economy.  Just looking at a list of Medical Sales Jobs that are currently available paints a more optomistic picture of the plight of Medical Sales Reps in the current economy.

HSE cutbacks will of course play a part in damaging sales, particularly when it comes to capital equipment.  Sales will not stop though.  Areas like wound care are always going to have a ready market.  The same goes for Pharmaceuticals.  In a word – consumables.  If safety is what you are after then consumables is where you should be aiming yourself right now.
